The Death Penalty

The Death Penalty

The death penalty, also known as capital punishment, is a government sanctioned practice in which a person is sentenced to death as punishment for a crime. These crimes are often serious and encompass murder, treason, espionage, etc. and the way this is done is through use of lethal injections, electrocution, the firing squad, etc.
There are plenty of reasons to be against the death penalty, of which, a few are outlined below. First, the value of human life. No life is worth less than any other regardless of circumstances and no punishment erases a person’s right to life. This  does not mean that the person does not face the repercussions of their actions. What it means is that they own their life and their sense of free will. These are the essences of democracy and this is what most countries present as.
This method can also be used as a means for retribution. In a world, rife in corruption, using this method could lead to the unjust death of the innocent. The latter could also be targeted by human error and this is the gravest mistake. Thus, this tends to brutalize society as a whole. Statistics, too, clearly state that this method often fails to deter the criminal mindset from changing. As is the case, the point on spending the country’s budget on this method is wasted.
There are also people who cannot be held responsible for their actions as they have been determined as clinically insane. To them, and to the rest, this treatment is cruel, inhumane and degrading.
In conclusion, the decision on whether the death penalty is an effective means is rendered useless as the cons far outweigh the pros.
